Spotify cuts lyrics display feature for free users

Spotify is one of the most popular online music platforms today with a diverse and rich music store and user-friendly interface. Recently, the application made a change to limit the ability to display song lyrics.

More specifically, many users of Spotify’s free plan have reported that they no longer see song lyrics when playing music. Instead, the location where the lyrics used to appear is now displayed with a message: “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium” and is accompanied by a link to subscribe. Soon after, this information was confirmed by Spotify as a test.

“At Spotify, we regularly conduct many new tests, some of which may be passed and bring a better experience to users. Of course, there are also some tests that are just surveys. Regarding Spotify limiting the ability to display song lyrics, Spotify is currently testing this with a small number of users in a few markets. As for other related information, I cannot disclose it due to the company’s security standards,” CJ Stanley – Spotify representative said.

Spotify’s move worried many users even though it was just a test. They believe that Spotify is looking for a way to force users to pay to use the service.

Over the years, applications have been finding more ways to charge users. Most recently, Telegram released paid Telegram Premium packages to add other utilities for users. Or in the future, many rumors show that Facebook and Instagram will launch paid packages so that users do not have to watch ads. This move comes from parent company Meta having to meet Europe’s general data protection regulations (GDPR). Therefore, launching a paid package can be considered a reasonable solution to both help Meta ensure revenue and help users protect personal data.
