TikTok admitted to illegally accessing user data

Recently, ByteDance (the company that owns TikTok) has just admitted that some company employees have illegally violated the data of TikTok users. Accordingly, during the investigation of the source of the internal information leak that took place earlier this year, company employees arbitrarily accessed the data of a number of American journalists.

According to reports, this invasion of privacy affected three journalists Forbes (an American publishing and media company), as well as others associated with these three journalists. According to experts, ByteDance’s admission could put more pressure on TikTok, as the platform is facing pressure from President Joe Biden’s administration and the US Congress due to security concerns surrounding user data in the country.

ByteDance shared that the company has fired the employees involved in this privacy violation. Mr. Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok said: “Such wrongdoing does not reflect the company’s principles. We will continue to improve the data access processHowever, experts say that any reassurance from TikTok is not enough to appease regulators and users’ concerns about their information.

Currently, the US Congress is planning to pass a law banning government employees from downloading or using TikTok on government-provided devices. Previously, many states in the US also made similar decisions. In addition, federal officials in the United States have also expressed concern that TikTok, with parent company ByteDance’s presence in China, could be used to manipulate users by intentionally distorting the type of content they watch.
